My Next Birth
My Next Birth is an online interactive tool that helps you choose between two options for mode of birth after a previous caesarean: planned vaginal birth after caesarean and planned elective repeat caesarean.
About My Next Birth
My Next Birth isan online interactive patient decision aid that aims to give individuals clear information that supports their values and goals for their next birth after a caesarean delivery.
It was created by a group of experts led by Sarah Munro, PhD, in partnership with the BC Ministry of Health, Perinatal Services BC, regional health authorities, and researchers at the University of British Columbia.
Our Development Process
My Next Birth was developed in accordance with recommendations from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada and Perinatal Services BC clinical practice guidelines.
-
My Next Birth was developed using a systematic, user-centered design approach in close partnership with health system and government leaders in British Columbia, Canada. After conducting a series of needs assessments involving surveys and interviews with patients and health care providers, we co-developed a prototype with working groups of health care professionals and patient partners, involving:
Value proposition mapping to select the interventions;
Cognitive interviews with BC patients who had given birth by cesarean to assess intervention usability; and
Decision mapping with decision makers, patients, maternity care providers, and researchers to identify implementation opportunities in the patient's care pathway.
We launched the final products in 2021, including:
The My Next Birth patient decision aid website providing balanced information on options;
A clinical decision support algorithm and “conversation guide” for care providers; and
A “What Matters Most to Me” personalized report summarizing each patient's knowledge and preferences.
The My Next Birth intervention can be introduced after the first cesarean to give patients accurate information personalized to their concerns, prior to discharge from care.

My Next Birth is used to guide informed, person-centered conversations for people in British Columbia, Canada. It can be adapted for similar settings. You can access the patient decision aid above or through our partners:
